I met Robert in 1988, when I arrived at the NAIA and formed a fast friendship with him, beyond my time there. He'd tell me stories of his days as a football player and how it wrecked his knees. Yet, he still loved to compete. I formed a softball team, and he played formed, bad knee and all. He drove 60 miles to play, I think, only because it meant so much to me. It was almost painful to watch him wrap that thing up before a game, but he carried that burden with his usual good humor. He had one proviso before playing the season's first game: We had to watch "The Natural."

Life has a way of pulling people apart; I got married and started a family and moved around for one job or another, but I
... thought often of Robert and his warm good. Today, I was thinking about him again, and, as I subsequently learned of his passing. He's in my prayers; I only hope he puts in a good word for me and my family with Our Lord.Read more
