On Thursday, December 01, 2022, Michael Louis Angelotti, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully at the age of 87.
Mike was born on July 15, 1935, in Erie, PA to Louis and Mayme (DeSantis) Angelotti. He received his Master of Arts and Doctorate in English Education from Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL. While in Tallahassee, he taught English at Blessed Sacrament School and Florida High School.
For 39 years, he was a professor of English Education at Texas Tech University and the University of Oklahoma (OU). During his tenure at OU, he served as an Associate Dean, Interim Dean, Department Chair for Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum (ILAC) and on many Doctoral committees. He retired in 2013 as Professor Emeritus. Mike was a passionate, dedicated educator beloved by his students as teacher and mentor.
He invited all to appreciate and participate in poetry and painting. Mike taught with great joy the summer course, Creativity in Teaching Composition (Paint-Write) - a course he created. As the third Director of the Oklahoma Writing Project (OWP), a professional learning community that celebrates good teachers and good teaching, he led several Summer Institutes and every year held "The Fountain of the Muse," at the National Writing Project Convention, inviting teachers from across the country to spend the evening writing and sharing poetry. When Mike retired as OWP Director in 2000, after a decade as director, OWP established the Mike Angelotti Poetry Award.
Mike was a gifted painter and writer. Living a poet's life through word, paint and photo captured his essence. He was forever the scholar studying the greats like Leonardo da Vinci or the intricacies of a butterfly's wing for a painting. He published two Chapbooks, Double Vision, and Double Vision II through the family's Paint-Write Press. He loved spending evenings in his studio painting or writing while listening to Jazz. Mike was known for his kindness to all, passion for life, good sense of humor and love of family. He was a beautiful soul that will be forever celebrated by those who loved and knew him.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Louis, and his mother, Mayme. He is survived by his wife of 60-years, Faye, his daughter, Lisa, his brother Jerry, several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
