LaVetta Kinsey Dent Obituary

1206 Ann Arbor Norman, Oklahoma 73069 - LaVetta Kinsey Dent, of Norman, OK, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, at home, after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, of the age of 67.

She was born on October 9, 1958, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, one of nine to Charles and Dolly (Odom) Kinsey and raised in Bethany, OK. After graduating from Bethany High School, she completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Central Oklahoma (B.A., Education) and earned her professional library degree at the University of Oklahoma (M.L.I.S., Library and Information Studies).

LaVetta loved libraries and retired from the Metropolitan Library System after 44 years, lastly, serving as a Regional Director. Over the decades, she held numerous positions across the system, including managing the Village. Almonte, and Ralph Ellison Libraries. However, it was children's literature and services for families that captured her heart.

When first meeting her husband, she announced she was 4'11" - and a half. She placed a strong emphasis on the extra half inch. She was also a frequent visitor to the OKC traffic court division for speeding tickets. Aside from her need for speed, she loved to cook, collect cookbooks, plant flowers, travel, spend time with her family, and discover new restaurants. It's been noted she has seen every Friends episode to the point where she can recite the scripts from memory.

Her greatest joy was being a mom to her son whom she had at 45. A wonderful mother, wife, and sister, she made the world an amazing place. She is survived by her husband Nelson Dent, son Mason Dent, and her siblings; Chip Kinsey, Linda Sharp, Georgia Zweiacher, Hugh Kinsey, Paul Kinsey, John Kinsey, and Mary Gurin. She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Dolly (Odom) Kinsey and her younger brother William Kinsey.

The funeral will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church where LaVetta was a longtime member. The interment of ashes will be in the Memorial Gardens and Father Joseph Farber will be officiating the service, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations (amount will be matched by the family) can be made to St. Michaels Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 720326, Norman, OK 73070.
