John David “J.D.” Carter, 86, longtime Duncan resident, died Monday, March 12, 2012 in Norman. A memorial service to celebrate a life well lived will be 4 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, in Duncan, with the Rev. Tracy L. Wilson and the Rev. Sue Trei-Conrad officiating. J.D. also known by his nickname “Fuzzy”, was born on June 21, 1925 to E.F.”Fuzzy” and Ruby Pope Carter in Duncan. J.D. also known by his nickname “Fuzzy”, was born on June 21, 1925 to E.F.”Fuzzy” and Ruby Pope Carter in Duncan. He graduated from Duncan High School in 1943. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the US Army Air Corp. J.D. graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1949 with a degree in business management. While attending OU he played on the 1948 baseball team and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He met Sally Carroll of Fairfax at OU and they were married on June 12, 1949. J.D. then went to work for Visco and the couple lived in Hayes, Kan. They later settled in Duncan in 1951 and J.D. joined his father in Fuzzy Carter Outdoor Advertising, working there until 1972. He was employed in the advertising department of the Duncan Banner until his retirement in 1987. An avid golfer, J.D. was a life member of the Elks Golf and Country Club, in Duncan. He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Duncan and served as Elder. He also joined the First Christian Church of Duncan. J.D. was a member of the Rotary Club, the Duncan Library Board, Serving as President. He belonged to the OU Alumni Association and the University of Oklahoma Basketball Tip In Club. J.D. was also a member of the US Golf Association. J.D. was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Sally, of 49 years in 1997. He is survived by one son Randolph Alan Carter & wife Elise Weiser Carter and one daughter Catherine Carter Murphy & husband Brendan Murphy all of Norman, eight grandchildren: Annalissa Carter Richardson & husband Heath, Laura Carter Gmeiner & husband Andy, Ashley Elizabeth Carter, Caroline Rose Carter, Jeremy Matthew Shives and wife Allison, Tanya Jean Shives, Laurel Elizabeth Murphy, and Hailey Anne Murphy, three great-grandchildren: Lena Marie Gmeiner, Taylor Faith Richardson, and Lola Shives and cousins: Jolene Freeman of Duncan, Marilyn Elkins of Austin, Texas and Don Carter of Dallas.
