The Rev. Dr. David George Matheke entered his eternal rest on January 22, 2023. He passed from congestive heart failure and was living in Norman, OK at the time of his death.
Born on January 21, 1944, he lived in East Orange, NJ until 1972 when he moved to Beaver Falls, PA to pursue his ministerial career. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1966 earning a BA in History, Yale Divinity School of Yale University in 1970 earning a Master of Divinity, and Vanderbilt University Divinity School in 1972 earning a Doctor of Divinity degree.
Dr. David, as he was warmly referred to by friends and parishioners, was ordained in Beaver-Butler Presbytery on October 15, 1972. He served Steffin Hill Presbyterian Church (Beaver Falls, PA), First Presbyterian Church (Carnegie, PA), John Knox Presbyterian (Scott Twp., Pittsburgh, PA), Silverlake Presbyterian (Los Angeles, CA) and retired from the First Presbyterian Church (Fullerton, NE). Early in his ministry, he served as a summer camp counselor on Presque Isle, PA. Throughout his ministerial career, Matheke enjoyed his affiliation with the areas' ministerial associations and Rotary Clubs.
Matheke was a loving father and a deeply curious thinker. Always ready to discuss history, theology, existentialism, and politics, he was passionate about sports whether as a player or fan. His favorite baseball team - the New York Yankees - remained so all his life. Mickey Mantle was his most favorite Yankee. Coming to Beaver Falls, he became a lifelong Pittsburgh Steeler fan. Travel was one of his passions and he enjoyed visiting so many of our nation's national parks and loved taking long walks to reflect and commune with nature.
Rev. Dr. Matheke was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Elizabeth Lane Matheke and Francis "Frank" Henry Matheke, and his second wife, the Rev. Revel DeBoer Loedy Matheke. Survivors include his daughter, Rain Matheke (Pittsburgh, PA); his sister, Judy Lane and nephew Eric Michael Hutchinson (Norman, OK); and nephew Mark Lane Hutchinson and Gertrude Buck "Trudy" [Matheke] Hutchinson both of Guilderland, NY, as well as many cousins.
