Betty D. Gibson Obituary

Yukon, ok - Betty D. (Slater) Gibson was born on August 17, 1936 in Dierks, Arkansas, the only child of Dorothy Dean (Branstine) Slater and William C. Slater, Jr. She died on August 1, 2026 in Yukon, OK at the age of 89.

Betty was educated in Broken Bow, OK for grades 1-12. After one year at Phillips University in Enid, OK, she transferred to and graduated from Southeastern State College (now Southeastern Oklahoma State University) in Durant, OK with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1957. She earned her Master's in Education from the University of Oklahoma in 1974 and continued postgraduate work at OU.

Betty met her husband-to-be (William W. Hoot Gibson) at Southeastern, where he was a three-sport letterman. The two were married on August 17, 1957, and began their teaching/coaching careers in Sherman, TX. They moved from there to El Paso, TX, and four years later moved to Tularosa, N.M. From there, the couple moved back to Oklahoma; first to Davis, then to Hugo, then to Anadarko.

During those years, Betty taught physical education and health, tennis, science, English, reading, and speech; also serving as a librarian. In 1971, Hoot stopped coaching and became an administrator in Norman at Central Jr. High (later Central Mid High) until his retirement in 1992. Betty taught at Midwest City High School for six years (chairing the English Department for four), then transferred to Norman High School to teach English. She became a counselor in 1981 until her retirement in 1993, completing her 36-year career in education. Hoot completed 35 years.

Because of her parents' emphasis on education and Hoot's and Betty's careers, the family is leaving endowed scholarships for high school seniors at Ardmore High School in Hoot's and his dad's names and at Broken Bow High School in the Slater's and Gibson's names.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Hoot in 1997 and her parents Dorothy and Willie, in 1997 and 1999, respectively. She is survived by cousins, friends and many "late-in-life" friends at Spanish Cove Retirement Village in Yukon, where she moved in 2004.

A private graveside service will be conducted at Denison Cemetery in Idabel, OK, where Betty will be interred beside her husband and her parents.
