William "Bill"'s Story
William "Bill" Pendarvis passed peacefully at his home in Happy Valley, Oregon on February 18, 2017. Bill was born in Barnsdall, Oklahoma on January 22, 1924 and grew up there, a time that always had a profound influence on his life. He later attended Oklahoma State University until WWII, when he enlisted and served as a Marine lieutenant, a fact he was always proud of. After the war Bill attended Cornell University on the GI Bill, and upon graduation went to work for William Volker and Company which took him to Portland, Oregon. It was there he met the love of his life, Betty Lillian Luckey. They were married on February 1, 1952. Immediately following their marriage Bill took a position with Columbian Philippines in the Philippine Islands where he remained with Betty for 20 years, eventually managing all their operations from Manila. n the early 1970's Bill and Betty left the Philippines when Bill, with a former friend from William Volker, Bob Grissom, started a Hickory Farms of Ohio franchise with one store in Eugene, Oregon later to own all stores in Oregon, Washington and Alaska and making many friends along the way. Bill and Bob sold their Hickory Farm franchises in the late 1980's. Shortly thereafter Bill became intrigued with growing grapes on the property he and Betty resided on. That led to another 20 year business involvement with Eugene Wine Cellars, the B2 label, and a café and wine bar in Portland. He loved to fish, play tennis, and bring people together to have good time and enjoy each other. Always the adventurer and traveler, Bill and Betty spent time in over 75 countries in their lives, making friends in every one. Never forgetting his roots he always cherished returning to Oklahoma for Big Heart Day and his connections there. His warm spirit, contagious cheerfulness, and wise counsel will be sorely missed by many throughout the world. Bill is preceded by his wife Betty, his son Scott Pendarvis and wife Sherry, his son Mark Pendarvis and wife Loretta, and two grandchildren Paige and Linda. There will be a private family internment with a life celebration at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, Oregon at 2pm on April 22nd.
