Marcus's Story

Text size

Marcus Cochran, the son of Maurice and Opal, was born in Purcell, Oklahoma and raised in Lexington. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1970. Marcus studied art at the University of Oklahoma, East Central University, and the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. While in Baltimore, he met Ruth Green. They married in 1976. Together they raised two children.
Marcus worked for Tyler and Simpson Food Company for ten years. He drove a school bus for the Little Axe School District. In 1994, he became an over the road truck driver, driving for CRST, PAM, Ben E. Keith, and finished his career at Gilbert and Sons Trucking. After retirement, Marcus worked part time for the City of Norman at the Little Axe Community Center. He continued painting, working with stained glass, playing guitar with his friends, and fixing his 1975 VW Bus. Marcus derived his greatest pleasure in spending time with friends and family, and especially playing with his grandchildren. Marcus had passion for art, music, and politics, which he passed on to his children along with the importance of life-long learning. His subversive sense of humor and quick wit often brought smiles and laughter to his friends and family members.
Marcus is survived by his son Joshua Cochran (Heather) of Ypsilanti, Michigan, daughter Hillary Cox of Noble, brothers John, Mark, Tom, sister Cathy, and four grandchildren: Clayton, Cody, Michelle, and Margaret. He was preceded in death by his brother David in 1975, father Maurice in 1992, and mother Opal in 1994. There will be a small, informal memorial service at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 7 at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center, or locally to the University of Oklahoma Fred Jones, Jr. Museum of Art.
