Iva's Story

Text size

Iva Jean Griffith, 89, of Norman passed away Tuesday, February 28th, 2017. She was born July 14, 1927 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to John Emmitt Gregory and Edith (Darks) Gregory.
She grew up in Muskogee, Oklahoma where she graduated from Central High School. While there, her best friend and tennis buddy, Lois Griffith, introduced her to her brother, Norris. They became high school sweethearts and continued to share letters during Norris' service in Europe during World War II and his subsequent rehabilitation from his injuries. They married in 1946 and moved to Norman, Oklahoma where she was her Norris' support as he worked on his Engineering Degree at the University of Oklahoma. She worked for the telephone company in those years. Iva accompanied Norris to many different states and cities, making homes wherever she found herself. She was a loving mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren and was a great cook, often making an extra pie to share with a neighbor.
Iva and Norris retired to Norman, Oklahoma in 1991 and joined The First Baptist Church. She sang in the choir, participated in many outreach activities but her favorite was providing food and clothing to those in need of help. She also loved volunteering at The Ronald McDonald House at Norman Regional Hospital. In her later years, she was the main caregiver to her older sister Martha and, subsequently, for her husband, Norris, who counted on her for everything. She was a giver and was happiest when there was something she could do to help someone else.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Norris Aldredge Girffith, one sister, Martha Ellen Gregory Bowman and three brothers, Kermit Gregory, Newell Gregory and Willard Gregory.
She is survived by her children Mary Annette Griffith, Cassandra Lou Shires and her husband Mark, Gregory Mark Griffith and his wife Myriam; five grandchildren, DeAnna Michelle Shires, Sarah Shires West, Lauren Claire Shires, Mark Alan Griffith and Candice Marie Cutrone; five great grandchildren, Collin Mark Nielsen, Kiran Elyse Nielsen, Kane Chay West, Mason Paul Cutrone and Tyler Mark Cutrone.
Funeral Services will begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 4th, 2017 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Wade Smith of the First Baptist Church of Norman, 3401 Havenbrook Street in Norman.
Memorials may be made in memory of Iva Griffith to The Ronald McDonald House.
