Hazel's Story

Text size

Hazel Imogene Beggs was born 94 years ago east of Norman. Being born in 1923, she had the adventure of living through many histories most notable events, i.e. The Great Depression, The Dust Bowl and World War II. Hazel married Fonie Beggs. Shortly after they were married, Fonie joined the military. This set the stage for Hazel to experience many of life's joys. Fonie's military career took them nearly all over the United States. Eventually the two started a family. Hazel and Fonie had two beautiful children named DeWayne and Bonita. Hazel had a passion for the Lord, family, music and gardening. Literally, there was nothing this strong woman could not achieve. She instilled great values and strong moral ethics in her family. Soon enough Hazel became a grandmother. Becoming a grandmother was one of Hazel's most rewarding accomplishments in her life. Shortly after, Hazel earned the nickname "Granny Gooch". From that day forward, everyone knew her as such. Granny Gooch was dedicated to taking care of all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Granny Gooch showed us how to love one another, be a good listener and respect your fellow neighbor. She was the true epitome of strength. Granny Gooch was known for her family gatherings, luscious flower gardens and infallible wisdom. Despite her many life's challenges, she always had a smile on her face and love in her heart.
She was preceded in death by her Parents Joe and Rosie Henson, Husband Fonie, Son DeWayne Beggs, Daughter Bonita Mize, Brother Milton Henson, Sisters; Ellen Box, Viola Smith, Maudie Lynch and Billie Jean Jackson, Granddaughter Shelly Annette Mize.
