Colonel U.S.A.F. (Ret) Paul's Story

Colonel U.S.A.F. (Ret) Paul W. Edwards died April 10, 2017, at Norman HealthPlex in Norman, Oklahoma. He was born October 13, 1928, in Compton, California, to Eber Robert Edwards and Leta Inez (Chamberlain) Edwards. He moved with his family to Arizona in 1933, to Idaho in 1939, and to Colorado in 1940. After graduating from school Paul worked at well drilling and in grocery, furniture, and floor covering businesses.
On October 18, 1951, Paul enlisted in the United States Air Force and was sent to Lackland Air Force Base for basic training. After basic training, he was assigned to a P-51 fighter unit in California. While there, he was selected for Officer Candidate School (OCS). After graduation, Paul served in a B-47 unit in California, an intelligence unit in Germany, and at HQ Tactical Air Command in Virginia. In March 1966 he was selected for duty in Vietnam and flew 100 missions over North Vietnam in EB-66 aircraft. After Vietnam he was assigned to Headquarters Pacific Air Forces Command in Hawaii and to Headquarters Tactical Air Reconnaissance Center in South Carolina. In 1971 he was selected to attend Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, and upon graduation was assigned to Headquarters Air Force Security Service Command at Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, where he served as a staff officer and as Commander of the Air Force Communications Security Center. His last assignment was at Tinker Air Force Base where he retired in December 1979.
In 1982 Paul married Mary Thomas of Norman, Oklahoma and became a permanent resident of Norman. Together they worked side by side until 2013. At that time they closed Northside Market on Porter and Robinson after running it for over 51 years.
Colonel Edwards was preceded in death by his brothers, Lowell Norman and Wilfred Eber, both of Utah, and his brother Ira of Cedar Edge, Colorado; and his three sisters, Muriel Marshall, Eileen Kempf, and Ione Tyler, all of Colorado.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Edwards of the home in Norman; his son Rex and his wife Ishita and grandson Mark Edwards, all of Simi Valley California; his son Paul Jr. of Los Angeles, California; and two daughters, Roberta Fullbright and husband Vernon of Gracemont, granddaughter Julie Tackett and husband Dustin of Oney Ok, and Cheryl Shelton and husband Joe of Moore, Oklahoma and grandchildren Robbie Smith, of Midwest City, Keith Hargis and wife JoAnna of Moore, Steve Hargis and wife Becky and Chris Shelton, all of OKC, Lennie Hathaway, Joseph Hathaway, and Matthew Hathaway all of Moore, Lori Smith of Moore, and Jennifer Hargis of OKC, Donita Holdge and husband Larry of Moore, and Grandson Daniel Holdge his wife Jennifer of Norman.
Great grandchildren are Jessica Henderson , Greg Hitchcock and Shawn Hitchcock, all of OKC, Hudson Tackett of Oney, Pearl Holdge and one on the way from OKC, also one great-great grandson Jaden Hitchcock of OKC, and one great-great granddaughter, Tonnessa Henderson of OKC.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Saturday, April 15, 2017, at 2:00 pm, with Rev. Jeff Burns officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Oklahoma City.
