Yumalee's Story

Yumalee Virginia Bowman, 95, of Norman, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at her home in the early morning hours of Monday, November 27, 2017.
Mrs. Bowman was born in Nowata, Oklahoma, August 21, 1922, to Theophilus Haze Smith and Bertha Amilee Ward Smith. She graduated from Wewoka High School in May 1939 and from the University of Oklahoma in June 1949, with a Bachelor of Science in Commercial Education.
While they were attending the University of Oklahoma, Yumalee married Henry Lewalling Bowman, her high school sweetheart November 21, 1942. Mr. Bowman was soon commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, and the couple found themselves at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, where Mrs. Bowman served as a stenographer in the war effort while Lt. Bowman was being trained to deal with worldwide inventory of Ordnance Supplies. They returned to Norman where they finished their studies at the University of Oklahoma.
Mrs. Bowman spent most of her career as a self-employed Public Accountant. She loved her work and enjoyed her many clients. She was active for many years in the Order of the Amaranth, the Order of the Eastern Star, White Shrine, International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, and the International Order of Job's Daughters, serving in a variety of leadership positions in the local, state and international levels. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Norman Unit 88 for 69 years, serving as the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Oklahoma President 1987-1988. She worked with the youth of the Auxiliary as a counselor for Oklahoma Girls State. When her children were growing up, Mrs. Bowman was an active youth leader in both the Girls Scouts of America and the Boy Scouts of America.
Mrs. Bowman was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her three children, Barbara Ann Bowman, Vickie Lynn Gray (and Darby), John Henry Bowman (and Laura); grandchildren, Kristen Marie Amberg (Jack), Kevin Grant Gatewood, Mary Johanna Tuttle, Matthew Henry Bowman (and Caroline); and great grandchildren Margaret Ann Amberg, Theresa Marie Amberg, Michael John Amberg, Dana Tuttle and Sera Tuttle.
A memorial service will be held for Mrs. Bowman, Friday, December 15, 2017 at 10:00 am in the Chapel at Primrose Funeral Home in Norman.
