Wanda Maurine Metzger, 85, passed away peacefully with family at her side Tuesday, June 6, 2017 in Norman, OK. Memorial services are pending at Memorial Park Cemetery in Muskogee, OK. Wanda, the fourth of eight children of parents Carrie and John Riley Ennis, was born May 11, 1932 in Webbers Falls, OK. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class and then attended Draughons Business School in Muskogee where she completed secretarial school. After finishing, she went to work as a stenographer for Cities Service Oil Company in Bartlesville, OK where she met and later married the love of her life, Vester Alan Metzger on June 11, 1955.
Vester took a job at Tinker Air Force Base as an Industrial Management Engineer and in 1961, about a year after the birth of her first son; she went to work as secretary to Dr. Mervin Clark, Chief of Medicine at Central State Hospital, now Griffin Memorial Hospital in Norman. She was a dedicated professional who enjoyed and took great pride in her work. During this time she made a wonderful, happy home with her husband in Norman and raised three children. She was a wonderful cook, a very creative person and was always working on projects and hobbies including ceramics, crafting as well as growing prize-winning miniature roses. She also was very devoted to meetings of the bridge club and looked forward to their annual Christmas party where she would get the chance to unveil her Christmas village. Vester became terminally ill in 1996. She was devoted to his care until his death on May 17, 1997. Having continued to work part-time during Vester's illness, she ended her career at Griffin Memorial after 39 years of service when she fully retired in July of 2000.
She found renewed happiness when her grandchildren were born. She loved them with all her heart and cherished the time spent outside playing with them on the deck in the backyard, painting pumpkins during Halloween or other craft projects. During this time she also discovered a passion for watercolors and took a painting class at Rose State College with two of her close friends. She produced dozens and dozens of landscapes; she had a special affinity for clouds, and spent hours working on her masterpieces that were hung throughout the long hallway of the family home.
Later in life she also was able to travel frequently, even visiting Spain and Portugal on trip to Europe. She loved museums and artifacts, having once wanted to be an archeologist, and she treasured the memories from all her travel adventures with friends.
She was devoted to her family and will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her.
Left to cherish her memory are her son Ron of San Francisco, CA; daughter Terri of Norman, OK; son Mark and wife LeeAnne of Piedmont, OK; grandchildren Georgia and Jonas of Piedmont, OK; sister Anna Kay and husband Jim Cates of North Richland Hills, TX; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by husband Vester Metzger; three brothers J.C. Ennis, Jimmy Don Ennis and Gerald Ennis; and sister Gloria Acuff.
