Viola O. York, 96, of Norman, passed away November 29, 2017 in Oklahoma City. She was born April 8, 1921 in Oklahoma City, the daughter of Arthur and Sophia (Barnicoat) Emerson. In 1941, Viola worked as an Aircraft Mechanic in Ft. Worth, Texas, building aircraft during WWII. She later worked as a telephone operator for Pioneer, who was purchased by Southwestern Bell and later AT&T. She retired in 1979 after 35 years of service. Viola was a faithful volunteer at the hospital in Norman for 33 years. She volunteered until age 90 and was honored upon her retirement for logging in more volunteer hours than any other at 14, 500. She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Viola was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Steve York; brother, Russell Emerson and a nephew, Joseph Owen, Sr. She is survived by her loving brother, Joe Emerson of Oklahoma City; stepdaughter, Linda York of Lexington; step-grandchildren, Karen York and Cannio York; nieces and nephews, Dorothy Owen, Brandon, Joseph and Corey Owen, John Emerson, John Emerson, Jr., Kelsie (William) Cigainero, Jeff Emerson, Whitney Emerson, Todd (Kelly) Emerson, Elizabeth Emerson, Luke Emerson, Zachary Emerson, Megan (Tony) Trower, Esly and Emerson Trower, Larry (Barbara) Emerson, Amber (Bob) Cagle, Ransom Cagle, Candi (Terry) Lee, Kurston and Kayann Lee, Larry (Sarah) Emerson, Jr., Keegan and Kaden Emerson. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 5, 2017 from 9am to 8pm. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 10:00am at the Sunny Lane Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunny Lane Cemetery.
