Verlin's Story

Verlin Tarpley, of Norman, Oklahoma, passed from this life on December 30, 2017. He was born on July 14, 1926, to Roy Francis Tarpley and Bertha Eaves Tarpley, in Holdenville, Oklahoma. Verlin married Georgia Lee Rowell on December 19, 1949, in Wewoka, Oklahoma. He was a cement contractor for many years before injury forced his early retirement. Verlin had a passion for his grandkids, fishing, and donut sticks. He was a proud member of the United States Army and served in World War II, as a combat infantryman. Verlin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Georgia, six brothers, four sisters, and a grandson, Brian Morris. He is survived by four daughters, Deborah Pounds, Oklahoma City; Sue Calvert and husband Jerry, Norman, Beverly Holloway, Norman, and Karon Austin and husband Gene, Newalla. Surviving grandchildren are: Gary Knowles and wife Kathy; Christopher Knowles and wife Lori; Casey Knowles and wife Charla; Lisa Setzer; Beau Setzer, and Nichole Bird and husband Jimmy. Also surviving are grandchildren by marriage, whom he considered his own, Jake Calvert and wife Samantha, Norman, Jaime Welch and husband Jimmy, Moore, and Jeannie Calvert, Newalla. Grandpa also leaves behind 24 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren, with another due in July 2018. Verlin is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends, who will miss him dearly. Funeral Services for Verlin will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the John M. Ireland Funeral Home and Chapel, 120 S. Broadway, Moore, OK. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Norman, OK. Services are under the direction of John M. Ireland Funeral Home and Chapel, Moore, OK.
