Rz Howell was born December 8, 1933 in Napa, California to his parents Durward Ingram Howell and Anna Loreta Owen Howell. He passed from this life March 27, 2018 in Simi Valley, California. Rz graduated Napa High School and attended the University of California at Berkley where he was the featured twirler for the Cal Band and a member of the Lamda Chapter of Kappa Delta Rho. While attending the University of California, he worked for the Alumni Association and Arthur Murray Dance Studios in Oakland, California.
Rz enlisted in the U.S. Navy and completed boot camp at San Diego, California. He then attended the Naval Aviation Cadet School at Pensacola, Florida and was the baton twirler with the Naval Aviation Cadet Band traveled with the band in various parts of the United States to promote the Naval Aviation Flight Program. Later, he was stationed at the North Atlantic Fleet Command at Norfolk, Virginia.
Upon completion of his active duty in the U.S. Navy, Rz moved to New York City where he attended Columbia University, majored in Psychology and worked part-time for an advertising agency. Following his time in New York, Rz returned to California and worked as a Juvenile Probation Officer for the Alameda County Court System. He also worked as a Psychiatric Social Worker at Sonoma State Hospital at Glenn Ellen, California and upon moving to Long Beach, California, he worked in various hospitals as a medical assistant and social work technician.
Rz's next move was to Norman, Oklahoma in 1968 where he attended graduate school at the University of Oklahoma majoring in Educational Psychology and Counseling. He participated in many student activities and twirled for the University of Oklahoma Marching Band. He also chaired the Sooner Rally Council and initiated a student card section at OU home football games.
Rz's professional career included employment as a Visiting Counselor for the Chickasha Public Schools System and as a Counselor in Norman Public Schools. He Worked full-time for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services as a Psychologist in Tulsa and the Southern Oklahoma Resource Center in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. During his years of employment, Rz worked part-time as a sales associate in the men's department of Dillard's in Tulsa and Norman.
In retirement, Rz was involved in various church and OU Alumni activities. He was a faithful member of FBC Norman and Stonebridge Community Church in Simi Valley.
Rz was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, stepfather Henry Behrens, sister Ruthe Anna Howell Warnock and numerous cousins in California and Oklahoma. He is survived by daughter Katie Howell Garrett, son-in-law Andrew Garrett, and granddaughter Cassandra of Las Vegas, Nevada along with several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Norman May 19, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Internment will be at the Tulocay Cemetery in Napa, CA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Norman Public Schools Foundation or University of Oklahoma Foundation (specify OU Band as recipient).
