Roberta's Story

Roberta Marie Brady, 94, of Norman passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Brookhaven Extensive Care.
Roberta was born April 11, 1922 in Belvidere, IL to Andrew and Louise Schwebke Miller. She graduated Belvidere High School in 1940. On December 20, 1941 she and her high school sweetheart Bruce Brady eloped to Palmyra, MO.
Roberta and Bruce travelled extensively, including all 50 states, Canada, Central America, Europe, Africa, and China. They especially liked camping and travelling in their RVs for the scenery, adventure, birding, and chasing steam locomotives. They first retired from Belvidere in 1969, moved into their little travel trailer, and travelled for several years. They settled in Fort Collins, CO when Bruce was enticed back to work. Upon their second retirement in 1980 they moved to Norman and continued to travel, driving to Alaska twice.
Roberta was an excellent seamstress and made clothing for her entire family, including all the gowns and matching ties for her daughter's wedding party—for which she also made and decorated the tiered cake. She enjoyed homemaking, family photography, knitting, crafting, reading, and her son's and grandsons' basketball and soccer games. For a while she applied her creative eye as the window trimmer at the local department store. In retirement she took up painting and making lovely quilts which are cherished. During the last few years Roberta's vision kept her from enjoying these handicrafts, but she discovered she was able to make beaded bracelets and shared them with family, friends, and staff where she lived. Roberta will be remembered for her skill at hanging wallpaper, her ability to hit a long tee shot, her chocolate chip cookies, her earrings and colorful socks, and her love of ice cream and all things chocolate.
Roberta was preceded in death by her husband Bruce in 2006 and by her parents. She is survived by her son Jan and Sharon Brady of Bradenton, FL; her daughter Meg and Fred Carr of Norman; three grandsons, Chris and Debbie Brady of Bradenton, Brac and Latonia Brady of Montgomery, AL, and Brett Carr and fiancée Kristen Bennett of Flagstaff, AZ; four great grandchildren, Andrew, Erin, and Kyle of Bradenton and newborn Piper of Montgomery; and her sister Lorraine and Ron Hodel, nephews Ron, David, and Jonathan, nieces Susan and Katie, and their families residing in Colorado and California.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Roberta's name to The Nature Conservancy of Oklahoma, 408 N.W. 7th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73102 or to McCortney Family Hospice, 623 N. Porter, Suite 200, Norman, OK 73071.
Family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 PM, Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman. A family memorial will be held in the summer.
