Robert William Appleby

July 20, 1922 - July 11, 2006

Robert William Appleby, 83, of Norman, died Tuesday, July 11, in Norman. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Crown Heights Christian Church, 4020 N. Western Ave. in Oklahoma City. Mr. Appleby was born July 20, 1922, to William James and Edna Case Appleby. He served in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. Mr. Appleby received his bachelor's and master's degrees before becoming a high school and college football and baseball coach. Prior to his coaching career, he was a minor league baseball player. In the 1952-53 season, Mr. Appleby took his baseball and football teams at Millikin University in Illinois to the conference championships and prevailed. He also coached football and baseball at the University of Toledo from 1953-57. Mr. Appleby was head football and baseball coach at Fenton High School in Bensenville, Ill., from 1960-85 where he won the conference championship. When he retired from coaching, he taught handicapped skiing at Winter Park Resort in Colorado from 1985-2004. Mr. Appleby was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dorothymaie. He is survived by his daughter Marilee Tussing and granddaughter Tori Tussing-Gadberry.
