Ollie Mae's Story

Text size

Ollie Mae Burton, 92, of Huntsville, Alabama, formerly of Norman, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at a hospital near her son's home in Huntsville. She was a dedicated churchgoer who often said that Sunday was her favorite day of the week because she was able to visit the house of the Lord.
Ollie was born June 15, 1925 in Depew, OK to Henry Raymond and Bernice Russell. Ollie had a lifelong interest in supporting and taking care of people, which often came out in her love of cooking for people and listening to them when they needed a friendly ear. Until her retirement in the late 1980s, she worked for the OU Sport Commissary, feeding the athletes, including entire football teams. She liked to call herself the "Jock Food Pusher." Bart Conner called her "Granny."
After being widowed at age 49, Ollie pursued a degree in liberal studies from OU. She loved to study her family genealogy, and was fascinated whenever she uncovered a new part of her extended family history, or was able to connect with another branch of the family tree. She traveled internationally to pursue her genealogical studies, and she had a particular interest in Scotland and her Scottish heritage.
In 2002, Ollie moved to Alabama to help her son and his wife raise and home-school their special family of 11 children. She was a generous and loving woman who supported her family through many times of crisis and growing pains. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her children: Edward A. Edwards and wife Betty, Marion Robinson and Robert Lee Edwards and wife Ramona; 22 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; siblings Sondra Wilson, Robert L. Russell and wife Jovena; and two step-children, Layne Wood and Evelyn Burton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; daughter-in-law Judy Edwards and son-in-law Doug Robinson.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 pm on Monday, February 26, 2018 at Primrose Funeral Service. Funeral will be at 11 am Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Alameda Baptist Church, Norman, OK. Burial will follow at Holdenville Cemetery, Holdenville, OK. Pastor Phil Ratliff will officiate.
