Norris Smith

Norris Smith, 87, passed away in Edmond on 22 January, 2019. Norris was born to Marion "Jeff" and Ruth Smith, the fifth of nine children. He is survived by two brothers, Drate and Ross, wife of 53 years, Jimmie, and son Norris Lee. Norris graduated from Norman High in 1950 and received many accolades: the first annual Thompson-Wampler award (most popular and well-liked student), a citizenship award, and letters in baseball and football. After graduation Norris served both in the Navy and as a Navy contractor in the Philippines around the time of the Korean War. Next, he attended the University of Oklahoma and received degrees in sociology (BA, 1958) and social work (Master's, 1960), then accepted a position at OU as a Professor of Social Work.
After marriage in 1965, Norris and Jimmie built a home in Oklahoma City when Norris Lee was born. The family relocated to Champaign, IL in 1967 to fulfill Norris' desire to work with children. Norris was a school social worker for over 20 years and served as president of the Champaign Education Association. He spent time in Florida and Pinehurst, NC, after retirement, but he returned to Oklahoma to be near family. His smile, graciousness, kindness, and loyalty will be missed by many friends and family members. A memorial will be held in Norman at Trinity Baptist Church -- 2 p.m., July 5, 2019 in the Fellowship Hall -- during the Smith family reunion.
