Mildred's Story

Text size

Mildred Imogene Ensey was born November 13, 1926 in Roady, Oklahoma to Eugene Gibson "E. G." and Ethel Mae (Stone) Nelson. She attended Wynnewood High School where she excelled at basketball and played on the 1941 and 1942 WHS State Championship teams. While working as a nurse at the Wynnewood Hospital she began to date a former schoolmate who had just returned from the Navy, J. C. Ensey. She and J. C. were married in December 1946 and remained happily married for 59 years. During their early years, they lived in California and Arkansas but made their permanent home in Wynnewood, Oklahoma where they raised three children. They were long time owners of Ensey's Cafe in downtown Wynnewood, which was known for its home cooked meals, bread and desserts. Mildred was an active member of the First Baptist church in Wynnewood for many years. She was also very involved in Beta Sigma Phi sorority which provided decades of friendship, scholarship and fundraising activities for the local community. She was a wonderful cook, a talented seamstress, and skilled at crochet. The warm inviting home that she lovingly created was enjoyed by generations of family. Mildred was also a smart business woman and a working mother before her time. She set an example of hard work and independence for her children and grand children. Leisure time was spent with family and friends enjoying activities like boating, bowling leagues, and card games. In their retirement years, Mildred and her husband enjoyed traveling and finally had time for their true passions - golf and grandkids!
Mildred passed away on January 21, 2018 at her home at Rambling Oaks Assisted Living, Norman, Oklahoma where she lived the last seven years of her life. She was predeceased by her husband, J. C.
