Melissa's Story

Text size

Melissa Lyn (Shelton) Burget, 43, was born 7.23.1973 to William and Barbara Shelton in Chariton, Iowa, and passed away May 26, 2017. She was the 5th of 7 children, and as a child would charmingly introduced herself as "Hello, I'm Melissa, and I'm number five!"

Ms. Burget graduated from Chariton High School in 1991, and attended the University of Oklahoma, receiving a Bachelor's degree in accounting. She then obtained her Juris Doctorate from Oklahoma City University school of Law and practiced law in Estate Planning and General Civil Litigation. She was an outstanding legal scholar and most proud of her legal writing skills, including appellate briefs to both the Oklahoma and the United States Court of Appeals. Her childhood was busy with 4H, horse riding competition, corn de-tasseling, team sports, dance and band. During high school, she was on the Queens Court; at OU, she was an active member of ZTA sorority.

Melissa always had a hug, a kiss, and an "I love you" for her loved ones. She will be immeasurably missed and forever loved.

Left to cherish her memories are longtime companion Troy Peddycoart of Guthrie, OK, children Grace (17) and GW (13) Burget, and their father Grant Burget of Vinita, OK. Parents William and Barbara (Hibbs) Shelton of Chariton, Iowa. Siblings Doug (Stacy) Shelton of Norman, OK; Karen (Greg) Jones of Oklahoma City, OK; Margo (Greg) Chediak of Topeka, KS; Rebecca (Gerald) Davis of Cushing, OK; Kyle (Reyne) Shelton of Norman, OK; Brandon (Becky) Shelton of Chariton, IA; as well as many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. We will celebrate this life that was not so much taken from us, but given to us; a private service will be held in Norman, OK. Interment will be in Norwood, IA, on August 5, 2017 at 10:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, suggested memorials may be made to Burget Children Educational Fund, C/O Bank of the West, attn: Rebecca Shelton Davis, 421 E. Main Street, Cushing, OK 74023.
