Leslie "Les"'s Story
Leslie "Les" Leaverton, 95, of Norman, Oklahoma passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. Les and her twin sister "Bobbie" were born February 11, 1923 in Cranston, Rhode Island.
During World War II, Leslie served her country in the United States Naval (Women's) Reserve, better known as the "WAVES". The Navy assigned her to the Oakland Naval Air Station Hospital where she worked as a pharmacist's mate. It was on a bus ride from the hospital to San Francisco that Leslie met John Leaverton when he offered her his seat. A three month whirlwind courtship followed, culminating with his proposal on the Golden Gate Bridge in 1946.
The Navy brought the Leaverton family to Norman, OK in 1952. Here, they raised three children; Cynthia, Dana and Bruce, with John working as a teacher at FAA and Les working as a nurse and nursing instructor. Their marriage was a long, happy and devoted partnership, spanning over fifty years until John's death in 1998.
Leslie was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother as well as a kind and loyal friend. She was fun to be around and in her presence, you somehow felt smarter, funnier. She was happiest spending time with her loved ones, enjoying conversation full of spirited verbal jousting, and storytelling with a dash of sly wit. Her captivating inner beauty will be missed by all who knew her.
Leslie is preceded in death by her husband John, her sister Bobbie and brothers Bruce and Kenneth.
Leslie is survived by her three children (Cynthia Leaverton, Dana Pharaoh and Bruce Leaverton), six grandchildren (Alison Pharaoh, Abigail Taylor, Molly Lamb, Julia Huynh, Jack Leaverton and Phoebe Leaverton), six great grandchildren (Liam Hutchinson, Evyn Taylor, Jason Taylor, Ellyson Taylor, Henry Lamb, and Clara Lamb) and her goddaughter, Sheri Mallory Stanley.
Friends and family will celebrate her life at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the First Christian Church, 220 S Webster Ave, Norman, OK. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a charity of your choice in her name.
