James Elder was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 11, 1947, to Alta Mae Bradley Elder and Carl Wesley Elder. James graduated from Norman High School in 1965, University of Oklahoma in 1969, and received his Juris Doctorate from OU School of Law in 1972. He practiced law in Oklahoma City until he retired in 2013.
James was active in Scouting since his youth, earning his Eagle Scout at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois in 1962. He served in all levels of Scouting and received many scouting awards. He was especially proud of attending the World Jamboree in Korea and four National Jamborees.
Beyond Scouting, he was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Norman where he served as a church elder. He volunteered his time as President of the Norman Public School Foundation Board of Directors, President of Beta Theta Pi Corporation of Oklahoma, and served from 2004 to 2013 on the board of United Way of Central Oklahoma.
James is survived by his wife of 43 years, Peggy, sons Brad, Jeff, Mike and Sam, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Michael. James was a well-respected attorney that loved his family, adored his grandchildren, touched many lives through his leadership and entertained his friends with his wit.
A memorial service honoring James will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 16th at First Presbyterian Church, 555 S. University, in Norman.
