George's Story

George Warren Johnson, 81, departed this earth on January 2, 2018, after a long battle with COPD. He was born on at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, on July 9, 1936, to I.J. and Emma Lou Johnson. George attend school in Lawton, Oklahoma City, and graduated from Pauls Valley high school in 1957. He attended Okmulgee Tech one year and entered the army in 1959. He was stationed in Alaska and had lots of stories to tell about that experience. In fact, George had lots of stories and would tell them to anyone willing to listen.
George married the love of his life, Mary Eva Nemecek, on April 15, 1962 in Pauls Valley. They moved to Purcell in 1963, Norman in 1973, Tucson, Arizona in 1987, and back to Norman in 2014. George worked in men's retail in all those places, and soon became the top salesman in each. He retired in 2003 after working in his nephew's automotive group for four years.
George was a loyal member of Mcfarlin Memorial Methodist Church in Norman and Catalina United Methodist Church in Tucson, Arizona. When son Gregg was in fourth grade and interested in playing football, George became active in the Norman Optimist Club until his move to Arizona. He also belonged to the Lions Club in Purcell and the Rotary Club in Norman and Tucson. George was an avid sports fan for Norman High and OU football, and Arizona University football and basketball.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John and Joe Johnson, sisters, Geraldine "Jerry" Grimmett and Margaret "Maggie" Click, brothers-in- law, Jack Grimmett, Jim Click, and Don Murphy, nephews Keith Johnson and Thad Murphy, and nieces Janet Rutledge and Tracy Rutledge.
George is survived by his wife Mary Eva, son Gregg (Anita) Johnson of Norman, daughter Amy (special friend Evan) Marquet, of Sherman Oaks, California, grandchildren Megan, Evan, Drew, and Jenna Johnson. Also, brother-in-law Glen (Maureen) Nemecek, sisters-in law Jo (Ed) Darling), Carol Murphy, and Marilyn Johnson, nephews Jack (Adrienne) and Brent (Mickie) Grimmett, Jim (Vickie) and Joey (Lalia) Click, David Johnson, Mike, John and Mark Johnson, David and John (Diane) Nemecek, Mark (Donna) and Todd (Rita) Murphy. Nieces Dana Murphy, Jill (Tom) King, Kelly Gish, Janet Johnson and Mary Murphy and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held January 11th at 10:00 a.m. in Mcfarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.
