Edwin's Story

Text size

Edwin "Skeet" Mahoney, 86, of Norman, Oklahoma died on January 14, 2017 after a long battle with dementia.
Born July 19, 1930 in Maud, Oklahoma, Skeet lived his childhood years in Antlers, Oklahoma with his mother, Beatrice Orr Mahoney, and sister, Jackie. As a child, he earned the nickname "Skeet" from the character of Baby Skeezix in the "Gasoline Alley" comic strip.
Skeet was especially proud of his summers at his grandparent's farm in Clayton, Oklahoma, and often regaled childhood stories of his happy times swimming in the Buffalo Creek, seining for crawdads, and fishing the ponds of the farm.
Upon graduating from East Central University in Ada, Skeet moved to Oklahoma City where he met his future wife and best friend, Wanda Nichols, on a blind date. They married in 1955. Their union was blessed with three children.
Skeet began his career at Tinker Air Force Base in 1953. As a logistics engineer, Skeet was on the team responsible for relocating the AWACS program from Seattle-Tacoma to Tinker. He retired after thirty-two years of service.
The Mahoneys moved to Norman in 1959. They joined St. Stephen's Methodist Church shortly after their arrival. Skeet remained a member of St. Stephen's until the time of his death.
Skeet was an active volunteer in his church and in his community. At St. Stephen's, he served on the finance committee, Top of the Hill, and, with Wanda, as a Youth Fellowship advisor when their children were young. You could also find Skeet serving dinners at Food for Friends, ringing the Salvation Army bell, and knocking on doors for numerous charities.
He loved his family, his Sooners, summers in New Mexico, country music, and the many friends he would meet along the way.
Skeet is survived by his beloved wife, Wanda; (son) Mark and Anne Mahoney of Stillwater; (son) Kevin Mahoney of Norman; (daughter) Lisa and Harold Hogan of Dallas; (grandson) Robert Mahoney of Dallas; (granddaughter) Erin and Ryan Speier of Tulsa; (great grandson) Grant Preston Speier of Tulsa; (sister) Jackie Ward of Canyon, Texas, and (half-brother) Beatty and Cissy Mahoney of Grand Lake, Oklahoma.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Skeet's name to Food for Friends or St. Stephen's Methodist Church, both in Norman.
Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 28th at St. Stephen's Methodist Church.
Arrangements are under the care of Havenbrook Funeral Home.
