Dorris Eberly Stead

Dorris Eberly Stead, born September 22, 1923, in David City, Nebraska, peacefully passed away on December 7, 2018, in Norman, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of John and Aliene Wilgus Eberly. Dorris graduated from David City High School and attended Colorado Women's College and the University of Nebraska. While at NU, she became a proud member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and was awarded a diamond recognition arrow for having the highest GPA in her pledge class. She married her high school sweetheart, Vincent Joseph Stead, on April 18, 1944. They were married 57 years prior to his death in 2001.

While Vincent served in the U.S. Army Corps during World War II, they were stationed in Victoria, Texas, and Victorville, California. After his military service, they returned to David City then moved to Denver, Colorado, where Dorris worked at Denver University and Loretto Heights College. In 1965, Vincent's career took them to Ponca City, Oklahoma, where they both worked with Continental Oil Company. They retired in 1985 and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. After Vincent's death, Dorris moved to Norman.

Dorris was a devout Catholic. While in Colorado Springs, she served as a lector at St. Patrick's Church. She remained active in Pi Beta Phi sorority, serving as an officer in the Kay County Oklahoma Alumnae Club, as President of the El Paso Colorado chapter for 2 consecutive years, and as a voting delegate for national and international conventions. She enjoyed snow skiing, Pennsylvania Dutch toll painting, knitting, crocheting, music ranging from classical to Dixieland jazz, and loved dogs of all kinds. Her family was her deepest love. Her most fervent wish was for a world filled with peace, kindness, and compassion for all living things.

Dorris is survived by her daughters, Susan Denison and husband Steve; Melissa Pickens and husband Craig; grand-daughter Jessica Studley and great-grandchildren Aidan and Nicolas; several nieces and nephews; and her dearest friend Helen Long of Andrews, Texas.

Dorris is preceded in death by her husband Vincent; her parents John and Aliene Eberly; her brothers Wilgus and wife Margaret Eberly, and Richard and wife Viola Ann Eberly.

The family is deeply appreciative of the staff of Medical Park West Rehabilitation Center and Valir Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of Dorris during the last years of her life.

A mass of Christian burial celebrating Dorris' life will be held at St. Thomas More Parish in Norman, Oklahoma, at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 14. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Vincent de Paul charities of St. Thomas More Parish helping people in need in Norman and Noble, Oklahoma.
