Donald Roy Huddleston, 76, of Oklahoma City, passed away peacefully at his home on September 6, 2017, after a year-long struggle with recently diagnosed lymphoma. Don was born on February 1, 1941, in Norman, OK, to Clifford Warren Huddleston and Anna Mildred Davenport. As a child, he attended the First Assembly of God Church with his family in Norman.
Don attended schools in Norman, graduating from NHS in 1959. He joined the U.S. Army that same year and reported for duty at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He subsequently was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ, and later served in the U.S. Army's 95th Division Army Reserve Band for several years in OKC. He attended the University of Oklahoma, and later graduated from Central State University (UCO) in 1972 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in marketing. His career spanned many years of sales work, including Purolator and several other companies, retiring from roofing company sales.
Don enjoyed golfing, racquetball, and loved being with his grandkids. He passionately and persistently enjoyed music. He played trumpet in the Norman High School Band, and was one of a few high school students selected to play in the University of Oklahoma band for a trip to the 1959 Orange Bowl. Also, during his senior year in 1959, he and a close friend, Jerry Witten, were the two Norman High School trumpeters selected to play "Trumpeter's Holiday" with the famed trumpeter Rafael Mendez at a concert at Norman High School. He enjoyed playing the organ, and his most recent passion was the ukulele, of which he was a member of the OKC Ukulele Club. He enjoyed southern gospel music and led many gospel singalongs during family gatherings. He was a member of Church of the Redeemer in OKC, where he served as head of the vestry, and also served as an elder in the church.
Don was preceded in death by his father and grandparents, and son Christopher Cole Huddleston of Land O' Lakes, Florida.
He is survived by his mother, wife Donna Huddleston of the home, daughter Elizabeth Huddleston Hargrove of OKC, stepson Eric Fightmaster of OKC, grandson Tristan Hargrove, and granddaughter Leighton Hargrove, brother Michael R. Huddleston (Glenna) of Norman, sisters Suzanne Waters (Dean) of Norman, and Becky R. Marchino (Joseph) of Liberty, Missouri, as well as a large extended family.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Tuesday, September 12th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Olivet Baptist Church, 1201 NW 10th St., Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73106. Interment will be at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Norman, OK, at a later date with a private family gathering.
