Claudia (Jones) Black, long time Norman resident, passed away Saturday July 29, 2017 at Crystal Place Assisted Living.
She was an avid reader and taught Bible studies in Churches and at home for many years. She also participated in numerous Literary Book groups. Claudia attended a variety of courses at the University of Oklahoma. She became a volunteer at Griffin Memorial Hospitals Children's Services. She then assisted in developing and expanding the services.
She was also a Leader in the Junior and Senior High school Peer Counseling programs.
She helped organize and was the first President of Juvenile Services Inc. (Center for Children & Families Inc.)
Later she assisted local Attorneys and Judges in securing a Federal Grant to create the Youth Bureau of Cleveland County. As a result of involvement in local Youth programs she was appointed to the State Juvenile Delinquency Board.
Claudia served two terms as President of the Cleveland County Red Cross. Her love of Opera and Music Theater led her to assist in organizing the University of Oklahoma Opera Guild. 300 members joined the first year.
Claudia was born in Sterling, OK to Marguerite and Carl A. Jones. She graduated high school from Central in Oklahoma City in 1943. She married Jack E. Black in 1944 at Montgomery Air Force Base, Alabama. Claudia spent her last years reading, studying and listening to her music.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers: Gene A. Jones and Charles L. Jones.
Survivors include her daughter Sally and her husband Jerry Alley of Norman; grandchildren: Adrienne (Kevin) Welp, Amanda (Dan) Abbott and Michael (Terri) Alley; great-grandchildren: Zachariah, Jackson, Farrah, Scarlett, Elliott; brother: Dale Jones and wife Dawn; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Claudia's life will be a come and go event from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday August 5, 2017 at Legends Restaurant, 1313 W Lindsey St, Norman, OK 73069.
